Kutna Hora is a charming, medieval silver mining town located just an hour’s ride from Prague, making it a wonderful day trip! After arriving in the town center, you can enjoy a nice stroll through this picturesque, old town, which was historically one of the most important towns in the Kingdom of Bohemia. Kutna Hora gained this reputation in the Middle Ages, when it became the main source of wealth for the Bohemian Crown Lands, making it the second most important city in the kingdom after Prague. Due to its exceptionally well-preserved medieval architecture, Kutna Hora has been designated as an UNESCO World Heritage Site, meaning that there’s more than enough off-the-beaten-path beauty and history for us to explore!
Detailed information
This half-day, private tour of Kutna Hora will explore all of the major sights for which this gorgeous town is known. We will start our tour at the famed gothic Cathedral of Saint Barbara, the crown jewel of the Kutna Hora’s town center. We will then stroll through the historical core of the town, taking in the former Jesuit college and it’s beautiful baroque statues, the historic center of the town from the Middle Ages—including some fantastic residential houses of that time or a stop at an amazing water fountain which dates all the way back to 1495—and a truly stunning view overlooking the local vineyards. We will also explore the town’s Italian Court - the former royal mint and seat of the kings, where the first groschen (medieval Bohemian coins) were minted back in 1300.
After a full morning of discovering Kutna Hora’s treasures, we will break for lunch at a popular local restaurant that serves up some of the best food in town. From there, we will drive down to Sedlec, one of the villages surrounding Kutna Hora proper, as well as being the oldest part of the town, where the tradition of silver mining had began. Sedlec, along with the Cistercian Abbey that it contains, is home to a unique baroque/gothic cathedral, as well as the world-famous Ossuary, also known as the Bone Church. Here, you will get the perhaps once-in-a-lifetime experience of visiting a small chapel decorated meticulously with bones of over 40.000 people. From here, we will then begin heading back to Prague, stopping briefly to see one of the region’s historic castles (Cesky Sternberk) or in Kolin, a town rich with Jewish heritage and history.
